If you decide not to participate remember your absence can be considered conspicuous. Failing to be a part of it lessens chances of new trust and increases likelihood of mistrust!

One of the first things that comes to mind as a marketer is whether to be yourself or a persona. If you choose to be yourself there is a lot more risk involved. You are putting your self out there and this means that anything you say can be linked back to you and this can help or hurt your reputation online. The other option is to be a persona. Now if you go with this option the freedom doors are wide open and you are not personally tied to anything you say or do on the Internet.

The next thing to keep in mind is to participate. If you are an active participating member and you are contributing to the social web other members will look favorably on you. If you join a number of different networks and cannot put in the time to participate it is not in your favor. In my opinion it is better to be a member of a few core comminutes you can contribute to then to spread yourself too thin and not get the full value of social communities.

The last thing to remember is no mater who you portray be your self. Try to be as human and natural as possible. People online are human just like you and me so treat them as you would treat any other person.
