URL’s and KISS

What is the number one rule when it comes to a good URL - the simple rule - Keep it Short and Simple. A long URL is not only hard to remember but a pain to type! If you are just starting a web site and want a good URL I suggest trying to find a URL that is short but still stands for what your website is all about.

What other factors make a good URL? Some other factors include a URL that is readable and understandable. If you are too tricky it can go right over your audiences head and they could have a hard time reading it and understanding it.

Another factor to keep in mind is that the URL is informative, just by reading the URL your audience should know what your website is about. If your URL only makes sense to you – what good is it?

Last but not least your URL’s should be clean and consistent and flow with each page. If you are looking at a cosmetics website and you go to a page about lipstick and good URL would be www.cosmetics.com/lipstick so you know the page you are reading is about lipstick.
